The Speaker noted that the partnership between Malawi and China has continued to grow over the years across various sectors, including infrastructure, education, health, and institutional development.
She singled out the US$20,000 cash donation as particularly timely, saying it would help bridge a funding gap as Parliament finalizes preparations to host the 55th Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) Africa Region Conference, scheduled to take place in Lilongwe from August 9 to August 16, 2026.
The continental conference is expected to bring together parliamentary leaders, legislators, and governance experts from across Africa to deliberate on issues affecting legislatures, democracy, accountability, and regional cooperation.
According to the Speaker, the financial support from China will contribute towards ensuring the successful hosting of the prestigious event, which places Malawi at the centre of parliamentary diplomacy on the African continent.
Beyond expressing gratitude, the Speaker also encouraged the Chinese government to continue investing in Malawi’s development agenda, particularly in the mining sector, which is currently undergoing significant reforms aimed at attracting investment and maximizing economic benefits.
She said continued cooperation between Malawi and China would contribute to sustainable economic growth while strengthening bilateral relations that have benefited both countries over the years.
China remains one of Malawi’s key development partners, supporting numerous projects in infrastructure, agriculture, education, health, and public institutions. The latest donation further reinforces the close ties between the two governments and highlights China’s ongoing commitment to supporting Malawi’s governance institutions and development priorities.
As Parliament prepares to welcome delegates from across Africa for the upcoming CPA Africa Region Conference, the donation is expected to enhance its operational readiness while underscoring the importance of international partnerships in strengthening democratic institutions.
