Malawi has received an official invitation from the United Kingdom to participate in this year’s Education World Forum (EWF), a major global gathering of education leaders, in what British officials describe as recognition of the country’s ongoing education reforms.

The invitation-only forum will take place from 17 to 20 May at the Queen Elizabeth II Centre in Westminster, London, bringing together education ministers from more than 100 countries for four days of high-level, peer-to-peer dialogue on global education policy, innovation, and reform.

Malawi’s Reforms Gain International Recognition
Malawi’s Minister of Education, Science and Technology, Bright Msaka, will represent the country at the forum. His participation is being viewed as a signal that Malawi’s education transformation agenda is gaining international attention and credibility.
According to Ben Nicholson, Acting British High Commissioner and Development Director, Malawi’s inclusion reflects confidence in the country’s reforms.

He said the invitation demonstrates that Malawi’s initiatives are being seen as “substantive and worth sharing on a global stage,” adding that the reforms represent serious, evidence-based progress in the education sector.
Nicholson further emphasized that Msaka’s participation highlights Malawi’s commitment to reform, describing it as a journey supported by international partners working alongside government efforts.

Minister Msaka to Present Key Education Reforms
During the forum, Minister Bright Msaka is expected to contribute to a high-level panel discussion scheduled for Tuesday, 19 May, titled “Building 21st-century learning on strong foundations.”
He will share insights alongside education ministers from Montenegro, Tajikistan, and Northern Ireland, focusing on Malawi’s practical reform agenda.
Msaka is expected to highlight two flagship initiatives:
- The National Mathematics Curriculum Reform
- The Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) programme
These initiatives aim to strengthen foundational learning outcomes, particularly in literacy and numeracy, while improving overall teaching effectiveness across Malawi’s education system.

Strengthening Foundational Learning in Malawi
The National Mathematics Curriculum Reform is designed to modernize content delivery and improve learners’ mathematical competency from early grades. Meanwhile, the Teaching at the Right Level approach focuses on grouping learners based on ability rather than age, helping to close learning gaps more effectively.
Education stakeholders have increasingly pointed to foundational learning as a key driver of long-term national development, particularly in low- and middle-income countries.
Malawi to Host Major African Education Exchange in 2026
In a further sign of Malawi’s growing role in regional education leadership, the country is set to host the Africa Foundational Learning Exchange in July 2026.
The event will bring together education policymakers and practitioners from across the continent to share lessons, strategies, and innovations aimed at improving learning outcomes in African schools.
