President Peter Mutharika and First Lady Gertrude Mutharika, through the Beautify Malawi Trust (BEAM), have extended humanitarian support to about 1,000 Malawians who returned from South Africa on Monday, providing them with assorted relief items to ease their reintegration.
The donation was presented as the country continues to receive thousands of citizens repatriated from South Africa following recent unrest.Mutharika to grace BEAM Strategy launch in Lilongwe
Speaking during the handover ceremony, BEAM Chairperson Dingiswayo Jere said the First Lady was deeply concerned about the welfare of the returnees and had mobilized the support to help them begin rebuilding their lives.
The donated items included duvets, sugar, soap, soya pieces, orange juice and flour.
Jere said the relief package would serve as a safety net for the affected families as they return to their home districts and work towards restoring their livelihoods.
“This support is meant to provide immediate relief and give the returnees hope as they start afresh after the difficult experiences they have endured,” Jere said.Shepherd Bushiri and Mary Donate K300 Million to BEAM Trust, Boosting Malawi Cleanliness and Youth Empowerment Initiatives
Chief Secretary to the Government Justin Saidi, who was the guest of honour at the event, commended the initiative and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to assisting Malawians returning from South Africa.
Saidi revealed that the number of Malawians repatriated so far has now exceeded 40,000, highlighting the scale of the humanitarian response required.

The BEAM donation adds to ongoing efforts aimed at ensuring that vulnerable returnees receive immediate support while longer-term reintegration programmes are being implemented across the country.
