MACHINGA — A Burundian national allegedly damaged property at Machinga District Hospital in Liwonde on Sunday after medical staff informed him that his wife had died shortly after being rushed to the facility for emergency treatment.

The deceased has been identified as Elysa Olivia Dudu, wife of businessman Gabie Musugwi, proprietor of Olivia Wholesale, situated near Ntaja Police Station opposite Agora Depot.

According to information gathered by Malawi Freedom Network, Dudu was rushed from Ntaja to Machinga District Hospital after she suddenly became unresponsive. Upon arrival, Musugwi reportedly appealed to health workers to provide urgent medical attention to his wife.

Medical personnel examined the patient but later informed the family that she had already died.

Sources close to the family allege that Dudu had taken medication intended to terminate a pregnancy before developing complications. However, medical authorities have not officially established or announced the cause of death, and investigations are ongoing.

Hospital sources confirmed the incident, adding that Musugwi has since agreed to repair or replace the damaged property.

Authorities also confirmed that an incident occurred at the hospital but said investigations are still underway. They indicated that an official statement would be issued once the inquiry is complete.

Police and health authorities have urged the public to refrain from speculating on the cause of death until the ongoing investigations and any necessary medical examinations are concluded.
