The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has once again reaffirmed its dedication to gender equality, receiving widespread praise from the Women’s Manifesto Movement and the NGO Gender Coordination Network (NGO GCN). The party’s recent convention was a landmark event, marked by the election of accomplished women to crucial positions: Mary Thom Navicha as National Director of Women and Gladys Ganda as Director of Elections. These appointments underscore DPP’s commitment to empowering women and advancing gender parity in leadership.
DPP’s proactive support for the 50:50 campaign, which advocates for equal representation of women in political roles, highlights its progressive stance in shaping a more inclusive political environment. This initiative stands out in Malawian politics, setting a new benchmark for gender equality.
Although the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has also made strides in promoting gender equality, DPP’s leadership is seen as particularly visionary. Maggie Kathewera Banda and Thandi Mphwiyo, Chairpersons of NGO GCN and the Women in Politics Committee respectively, commended DPP’s efforts. Banda remarked, “The party’s commitment to gender equality is a beacon of hope for a brighter future in Malawi.”
Other political parties in Malawi can learn from DPP’s example by prioritizing gender inclusivity and actively supporting women in leadership roles.
