Man arrested for infanticide in Lilongwe

A 34-year-old woman Ruthness Bikoko is in police cooler for suspected connection with an infanticide case.

Lumbadzi Police Station Public Relations Officer Sergeant Felix Kwinyani said the incident occurred on 24 August 2024 at Chomveka village, Traditional Authority Chitukula in Lilongwe.

Kwinyani said that villagers discovered a foul smell emanating from the pit latrine and reported the issue to police.

“When Police officers were notified about the incident, they sped up to the scene with medical personnel from Lumbadzi Health Center who found the body of the baby in the pit and was certified dead at the scene,” he said.

Kwinyani added that police arrested Bikoko who had been renting a nearby house and was suspected of being pregnant.

“She confessed to giving birth on 19 August 2024, at around 12:00 pm and disposing of the baby in the pit latrine because it did not cry,” said PRO.

Meanwhile, Bikoko who hails from Njondo village, Traditional Authority Kaphuka in Dedza has been arrested for the offence of infanticide and would soon appear for trial at the court.
