President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has said the Shire Valley Transformation Programme (SVTP) will greatly advance food security in the country and improve farmers’ livelihoods.
Chakwera was speaking at Pende Primary School in Chikwawa after assessing the progress of the SVTP project site on Tuesday.
“We are thankful to the World Bank for their support in this project, their contribution will enable us to have one of the biggest irrigation projects in Southern Africa, said Chakwera.
The president said that government is implementing projects that will benefit Malawians now and in the future.
“We are building strong foundations so that even in the future our children should benefit from these developments, he added.
In his remarks, SVTP Project Coordinator, Dr. Stanley Khaila said that once completed, the project will cover 10,500 hectares which are the total hectares for 13 mega farms owned by cooperative.
