Voter registration centre at Mchepa in Salima District lacks computer equipment

By Burnett Munthali

A voter registration centre at Mchepa in Salima District has halted operations due to the absence of essential computer equipment, according to the District Elections Officer, Alinafe Chisenga. Chisenga confirmed that the issue is currently being addressed by the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) headquarters.

At present, no voter registration is taking place at the Mchepa centre, and operations will resume only after the equipment issue is resolved. “We are waiting for the equipment to be fixed, and once it’s sorted, the registration process will continue promptly,” Chisenga explained.

Chisenga also revealed that the centre experienced network issues earlier in the day, but those have since been resolved, allowing smooth operations in other areas. “Despite the challenges at Mchepa, the voter registration exercise is proceeding well in other parts of Salima District,” he added.

Although there have been some setbacks, MEC remains optimistic that the registration process in the district will be completed successfully, ensuring that eligible voters have the opportunity to register and participate in the upcoming elections.
