By Draxon Maloya

Despite recent reports highlighting a mix of challenges and opportunities in Malawi’s tourism sector, Sunbird Hotels and Resorts Limited is forging ahead with unwavering determination.

The renowned hospitality provider is not only maintaining its high standards but also expanding its infrastructure, solidifying Malawi’s status as one of Africa’s most attractive destinations, celebrated for its stunning natural beauty, rich culture, and warm hospitality.

Speaking over the weekend in Mzuzu, Sunbird Hotels and Resorts Chief Executive Samson Mwale passionately described Malawi’s unique landscapes, shaped by the Great Rift Valley, which offer a diverse array of habitats, climates, and cultural treasures.

In a bold move to counter economic and environmental hurdles, Sunbird Hotels is investing a staggering K2.5 billion in the refurbishment of the Sunbird Mzuzu Hotel and its facilities, including the iconic golf course.

This milestone investment is set to revolutionize the tourism infrastructure, enhancing visitor experiences and supporting eco-tourism and responsible travel practices that promote conservation and community development.

“The rehabilitation of the Mzuzu golf course alone significantly boosts the quality of services we offer, aligning with our commitment to eco-tourism and responsible travel,” Mwale stated. “Such infrastructure development is crucial for enhancing visitor experiences and supporting sustainable tourism.”

Sunbird Hotels and Resorts’ efforts are in perfect harmony with the Malawian government’s initiatives, led by the Department of Tourism, to promote sustainable tourism aimed to ensure socio-economic benefits for local communities while preserving the nation’s natural and cultural heritage.
