Bon Kalindo Speaks Out: “This Battle is for All Who Stand for Democracy”

By Burnett Munthali

In a passionate video released on Friday, October 25, 2024, former parliamentarian and activist Bon Kalindo spoke out in support of UTM Secretary General Patricia Kaliati, currently under arrest on serious charges. Kalindo’s message, now circulating widely on social media, describes the struggle surrounding Kaliati’s detention as a “battle for everyone who believes in democratic principles”—not just UTM, but also the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), United Democratic Front (UDF), and all Malawians who value democracy.

Kalindo’s remarks highlight the wider implications of Kaliati’s case, framing it as a pivotal moment for Malawi’s democracy. “This is not just about Patricia Kaliati; it’s a fight for DPP, UDF, UTM, and everyone who believes in fair and democratic governance,” Kalindo stated emphatically. He argued that if the country does not unite to protect democratic freedoms, it risks allowing political injustices to deepen.

Kaliati’s arrest has generated strong reactions, with many of her supporters viewing the charges as politically motivated. Kalindo, known for his vocal advocacy for justice, emphasized that every Malawian has a stake in safeguarding democracy. “The principles of fairness and transparency are at risk here,” he warned, urging unity across party lines.

Kalindo’s video has sparked widespread debate, resonating with many who believe that democracy requires accountability, not selective justice. His words have been viewed as a call for collective action, uniting political parties and citizens to defend shared democratic values.
