HRDC Calls on President Chakwera to Address Malawians on Fuel Crisis

By Suleman Chitera

The Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) has urged President Lazarus Chakwera to directly and openly address the Malawian public regarding the ongoing fuel crisis, which has severely affected the nation’s economy. The HRDC highlighted that the President’s silence on the matter has only deepened the sense of uncertainty and despair across the country.

“True leaders reveal their character in times of crisis, standing with the people and guiding them through adversity. Real leadership is shown in how crises are resolved, not in empty promises or repeated excuses,” HRDC stated. The Coalition’s statement, signed by HRDC Chairperson Gift Trapence, calls for urgent action, stating that the government must confront the crisis with the seriousness it demands. This, they argue, is a crucial moment for President Chakwera to step up, acknowledge the depth of the fuel shortages, and provide clear, honest communication to the public.

The HRDC has expressed frustration over the failure of government officials to effectively handle the crisis, specifically pointing to recent assurances from the Minister of Information. Last week, Malawians were told that the fuel supply would stabilize over the weekend—yet the promise proved unfulfilled. “The nation deserves to know when this crisis will end, and it is evident that technocrats and ministers have failed in their duty,” reads the HRDC statement, underscoring the need for immediate accountability and transparency from government officials.

In addition, the Coalition criticized the lack of progress following the inauguration of the Nsanje railway by President Chakwera. At the time, the railway was celebrated as a strategic development expected to ease fuel distribution. However, just two months later, Malawians are contending with worsening fuel shortages. HRDC emphasized that the anticipated benefits of the railway have yet to be realized and questioned the government’s commitment to following through on its promises.

HRDC has also raised concerns over the management of carbon credit revenue, urging the government to use these funds to help resolve the fuel crisis. They argue that the revenue from carbon credits should be directed towards addressing the nation’s most urgent issues, including stabilizing fuel supplies. “Malawians deserve transparency and accountability on carbon credit revenue management,” HRDC stated, calling on the government to disclose how these funds are being used.

This urgent call from HRDC reflects a sentiment shared by many Malawians who feel that the current administration has not been transparent enough about the crisis and its impact on the economy. For many, this is a time for President Chakwera to demonstrate strong and empathetic leadership by directly addressing the nation and providing a roadmap to resolve the fuel shortage.

As pressure mounts, the people of Malawi look to the President for clear answers and decisive action that will alleviate their struggles.
