Epimark Nzalamba, a 36-year-old Rwandese national, has been convicted and sentenced by the Lilongwe Senior Resident Magistrate court for damaging a public road in the country.
Nzalamba was found guilty of driving on a temporarily closed road, damaging interlocking bricks, and will have to pay a fine of MK 200,000 or face 5 years imprisonment with hard labor.
State prosecutor Davison Banda pushed for a stiffer punishment to deter would-be offenders
Nzalamba pleaded for a stiffer punishment as a first offender.
Senior Resident Magistrate Shukran Kumbani concurred with the state and handed down the sentence of fine of MK 200,000 alternative 5 years imprisonment with hard labor.
Status: Nzalamba has paid the fine to escape the jail term
