Chiwembe Township in Blantyre has been hit hard by heavy rains that swept through the area yesterday, leaving a trail of destruction and displacement in its wake.
The devastating downpour, which has become an annual occurrence in the country’s rainy season, has once again exposed the vulnerability of the country’s urban infrastructure.
According to eyewitnesses, the heavy rains caused widespread damage to homes, roads, and other infrastructure in Chiwembe, forcing many residents to flee their homes in search of safety.
The displacement has added to the already dire living conditions in the township, where many residents struggle to access basic necessities like clean water, sanitation, and others.
“I was inside my house when I heard a loud noise,” said Ellen Frank, a resident of Chiwembe.
“I rushed outside to see that my neighbor’s house had collapsed. The rains were too heavy, and the water was flowing like a river,” she said.
Esther Simba, another resident, concured Frank’s sentiments. “I was at home with my children when the rains started. We had to run for our lives as the water rose. We’re now seeking shelter elsewhere, but it’s not easy.”
Doreen Tembo also expressed concern over the lack of preparedness and support from authorities.
She said: “We’ve been warning the authorities about the impending disaster, but no one listened. Now, people are suffering. We need urgent assistance to provide shelter, food, and other essential services to those affected.”
The Malawi government has been criticized for its slow response to natural disasters, including floods, which have become a recurring phenomenon in the country.
The government has promised to provide relief assistance to affected communities, but many residents remain skeptical.
