DAPP Malawi encourages girls to prioritize education

By Burnett Munthali

The Development Aid from People to People (DAPP) Malawi has urged girls to remain focused on their education and avoid distractions that could derail their academic progress. This message was delivered by DREAMS Project Technical Leader Mary Busiley during a donation event at Chinamvuu Community Day Secondary School in Traditional Authority Chigalu’s area in Blantyre.

During the event, DAPP Malawi donated various learning materials, including school bags and writing supplies, to girls supported by the organisation. Busiley emphasized the importance of education in empowering young girls and called on them to dedicate themselves fully to their studies. “Education is the key to unlocking opportunities and overcoming challenges. Stay focused and avoid anything that could negatively affect your future,” she urged.

The donation was warmly received by both the school administration and the students. The head teacher of Chinamvuu Community Day Secondary School, Isaac Kasitomu, expressed gratitude to DAPP Malawi, noting that such initiatives play a crucial role in promoting girls’ education. “This project has the potential to keep girls in school and reduce dropout rates, especially in rural areas where challenges like early marriages and financial difficulties persist,” said Kasitomu.

One of the beneficiaries, Mary Sidi, a Form 4 learner, also shared her appreciation. She highlighted how the donated materials would ease her academic journey. “I am very thankful to DAPP for their support. The materials will help me concentrate on my studies and prepare for my exams without worrying about resources,” Sidi remarked.

The donation is part of the DREAMS Loto Langa (LoLa) project, a five-year initiative funded by the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) through the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The project aims to improve access to essential services for adolescent girls and young women, ensuring they are empowered to pursue their dreams and lead healthier lives.

The event coincided with the International Day of Education, celebrated annually on January 24, which underscores the critical role of education in building sustainable and inclusive societies. Through programs like DREAMS, DAPP Malawi continues to contribute to this vision by addressing barriers to education and fostering an environment where girls can thrive academically and socially.

As the project progresses, it is expected to reach more girls in vulnerable communities, equipping them with the tools and skills needed to secure a brighter future.
