This Saturday, the Ekwendeni CCAP Hall will come alive with the vibrant sounds of laughter, music, and drama as Urunji Arts Theatre hosts its highly anticipated children’s theatre festival.
Eleven schools from the Ekwendeni Zone in Mzimba will gather to showcase their theatrical talents, honed through a recent training session on playwriting and directing.
“We are excited to see what the children have learned and how they will bring their stories to life on stage. The training was a huge success, and we are confident that the children will deliver outstanding performances,” Bernard Mchinguwo Gondwe, Urunji Arts Theatre director said.
The festival is a brainchild of Urunji Arts Theatre, which received funding from the Copyright Society of Malawi (Cosoma) through the Copyright Fund to implement a project dubbed Promotion of Children’s Theatre.
“Our goal is to nurture the artistic talents of children and provide them with a platform to develop their skills and build confidence,” Gondwe said.
Through this initiative, Urunji Arts Theatre aims to promote Malawian culture and creativity, showcasing the best of the country’s rich cultural heritage.
“Theatre is a powerful tool for self-expression and creativity. We believe that by promoting children’s theatre, we are not only fostering artistic talent but also helping to build the next generation of leaders and change-makers,” he said.
As the curtain goes up on Saturday at 10 am, the Ekwendeni CCAP Hall will be filled with the sounds of music, drama, poetry, and laughter, showcasing the best of Malawian culture and creativity. The festival promises to be an unforgettable experience for all who will attend.
Tao Jeka the Poet will be the guest artist during the festival.
During this year’s Day of African Child (DAC) commemorations, Urunji Arts Theatre commemorated the day by having performances on June 20 and 27 at Beehive Schools and Hilltop Private Schools in Mzuzu respectively.
