Residents of Area 25 Demand Justice as Police Restore Calm

Residents of Area 25 in Lilongwe are calling for justice after enduring months of violent attacks and robberies that left their community gripped by fear. The arrest of three key suspects has brought a sense of relief—but also concern—among locals wary of a repeat of past leniency.

National Police Spokesperson Peter Kalaya confirmed on Monday the arrests of Dyson Sinedi, apprehended in Area 43, alongside Adam Tsoka and Felix Magaleta, both picked up in Area 25 Mgona. The trio is believed to be connected to a string of violent incidents that have rocked the community over the past three months.

While residents have welcomed the arrests, many fear the suspects might be released prematurely, echoing past cases where offenders quickly returned to the streets.
“I’m happy they’ve been caught, but I fear they’ll be out again soon, like those pardoned on July 6. They could come back and terrorize us even more,” said Maria Maluwa, a concerned resident.

Survivors of the attacks shared chilling accounts. One of them, Mphatso Thauzeni, recounted being robbed of K6,500 and struck on the head until he lost consciousness.
“There was no peace here,” he said, “but now we have hope this nightmare will end.”

Community leaders praised both the police and vigilant residents. Henry Madzimayera, Chairperson of the Area 25 Neighbourhood Watch, credited the arrests to the strong collaboration between law enforcement and the community.
“We thank everyone who gave information to the police and us. It’s this teamwork that keeps us safe,” Madzimayera said.

Despite the restored calm, Madzimayera urged residents to remain vigilant and avoid staying out late, warning that some suspects may still be at large. The Malawi Police Service continues its investigations, assuring the community that updates on the case will follow.

For now, Area 25 residents remain cautiously optimistic—grateful for the police’s swift action but watchful for what lies ahead.
