The Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) have collectively received K149.9 million from the national budget under the Political Parties Fund.

According to the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties, MCP received K78.2 million, while DPP received K71.7 million. The disbursement is part of Malawi’s legal framework that allocates financial resources to political parties with significant representation in Parliament.

Registrar of Political Parties, Kizito Tenthani, confirmed the funding but raised concerns that no party has yet submitted a report on how the money is being used.

“So far, none of the political parties has accounted for the funds received. If they fail to comply with the law, our office will be forced to apply legal measures, including suspending financial support,” said Tenthani.

Under the Political Parties Act, registered parties with the largest number of Members of Parliament are eligible for state funding. However, they are legally required to be transparent and accountable on the expenditure of public resources.
