Blantyre, 12 October 2025 — The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has officially endorsed Hon. Sameer Suleman, Member of Parliament, as its candidate for the position of Speaker of the National Assembly in the forthcoming parliamentary election scheduled for 29th October 2025.
In a statement released today, DPP Secretary General Peter Mukhito confirmed the appointment, noting that the decision was made with the full endorsement of His Excellency Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, President of the Republic of Malawi and leader of the DPP.
According to the statement, the party considers the Speaker’s election a pivotal moment in shaping the direction of Parliament and consolidating the legislative arm of government under stable and effective leadership.
“All DPP Members of Parliament and our alliance partners are called upon to give their full support to Hon. Sameer Suleman in the forthcoming election,” the statement reads. “Securing the Speaker’s seat is critical to advancing the legislative agenda of the ruling party and ensuring stable, effective governance in line with our national priorities.”
Hon. Suleman, a prominent parliamentarian known for his outspoken and pragmatic style, is expected to bring both experience and assertiveness to the role. His appointment reflects the DPP’s confidence in his ability to preside over parliamentary business with fairness, integrity, and authority.
The party’s leadership has urged all its MPs and alliance partners to demonstrate unity during the election.
“The DPP leadership urges every DPP MP and alliance partners to unite behind the nominated candidate, attend the parliamentary session on 29th October, and vote to secure the Speaker’s position for the ruling party,” the statement added. “Your solidarity and active participation are essential to safeguarding our collective mandate and facilitating smooth parliamentary proceedings.”
Political analysts say this move signals the DPP’s determination to strengthen its influence in Parliament and ensure cohesive coordination between the legislative and executive arms of government.
The Speaker’s election, set for 29th October 2025, is expected to draw significant attention as political parties position themselves for greater parliamentary control ahead of key legislative debates.
For further information or coordination, the DPP has directed all inquiries to the party’s Secretariat.
