Lilongwe, Malawi — The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) legislator for Blantyre City South East, Hon. Sameer Suleman, is poised to become the next Speaker of the National Assembly, following his nomination and strong backing from the party’s leadership.

Sources within Parliament indicate that Suleman has gained significant support ahead of the upcoming Speakership elections, making him the likely successor to the outgoing Speaker. His nomination has been endorsed by former President and DPP leader, Professor Peter Mutharika, who has described him as a “committed and capable leader ready to restore order and discipline in Parliament.”

DPP Rallies Behind Suleman

Despite earlier reports of internal divisions within the DPP over his candidacy, the party appears to have rallied behind Suleman, viewing his rise as an opportunity to reassert DPP’s influence in Parliament.

Party insiders say that extensive consultations were held between Mutharika and senior members of the party’s parliamentary caucus, resulting in a renewed consensus to present a unified front behind Suleman’s nomination.

“The party believes Hon. Suleman represents the energy and boldness that DPP needs at this critical time,” said one senior DPP official.

Suleman Pledges Unity and Fairness

In his remarks following the announcement, Hon. Sameer Suleman expressed deep appreciation for the confidence placed in him, promising to lead the August House with fairness, neutrality, and commitment to national development.

“If elected Speaker, I will ensure that Parliament remains a platform for unity, integrity, and constructive debate,” Suleman said. “Our people expect leadership that promotes accountability and collaboration, not division.”

He further emphasized his intention to uphold parliamentary standards and create an environment that allows every legislator—regardless of political affiliation—to contribute meaningfully to the legislative process.

Political Analysts Weigh In

Political observers say Suleman’s potential ascension to the Speakership marks an important turning point for the DPP, signaling a possible generational shift in the party’s leadership.

Analyst Dr. Victor Kamanga notes that Suleman’s appointment would “test his ability to transition from a strong partisan voice to a neutral arbiter of parliamentary proceedings.”

“This role demands maturity, restraint, and impartiality,” Kamanga explained. “If Suleman manages that, he could reshape his political image and become one of the most influential figures in Malawi’s political landscape.”

A New Era for Parliament

As Malawi prepares for the next parliamentary session, expectations are high that the incoming Speaker will play a pivotal role in strengthening legislative oversight, enhancing decorum, and promoting collaboration between the government and opposition benches.

If confirmed, Hon. Sameer Suleman will officially assume the office as Speaker of the National Assembly, a role central to the nation’s democracy and legislative governance.
