The country’s Second Vice President, Enock Chihana, has said that the long-standing land wrangle involving Kasasile residents and the Malawi Defence Force (MDF) in the area of Traditional Authority (T/A) M’bwana in Nkhata Bay may require direct intervention from President Peter Mutharika to reach a lasting solution.

Chihana made the remarks on Monday during a meeting with traditional leaders and officials of Nkhata Bay District Council. The dispute, which dates back several years, saw a number of villagers allegedly displaced after the Malawi Defence Force reportedly claimed ownership of the land they occupied.
Chihana Condemns Abuse of Power
Speaking during the engagement, Chihana expressed concern over reports of harassment and forceful displacement of residents, emphasizing that security institutions must uphold citizens’ rights at all times.
“I know they were abused by MDF but whether you have a gun, you have a limit. You can’t abuse the citizens because you are holding a gun. Every citizen matters,” said Chihana.
He said involving the Head of State would help bring closure to the matter and restore the dignity and welfare of the affected families.
Government Working to Address Economy and Food Security
Chihana also assured Malawians that the government is actively working on long-term solutions to stabilize the economy and ensure food security. He highlighted efforts aimed at improving the availability of foreign exchange, food, fuel, and fertilizer across the country.
“We are working to resolve the economic challenges that Malawians are facing. Ensuring consistent supply of forex, food, fuel, and agricultural inputs is a top priority,” he said.
T/A M’bwana Welcomes Dialogue
Speaking during the same meeting, Traditional Authority M’bwana welcomed the Vice President’s commitment and expressed hope that with presidential intervention, the residents of Kasasile will finally regain their land and freedom.
“My people have suffered for many years. We are hopeful that this new engagement will bear fruit and the community will be restored,” said T/A M’bwana.
Background to the Dispute
The land dispute between Kasasile villagers and the MDF has been a matter of public concern, with human rights and governance activists calling for a fair settlement. The displaced families have long requested that government review the legality of the land takeover and compensate or relocate them appropriately.
Next Steps
With high-level government attention now focused on the issue, community leaders and affected households are optimistic that a lasting and peaceful solution is finally within reach.
