Justice Mtalimanja expressed gratitude to renowned social commentator Onjezani Kenani for the honour, describing the recognition as a motivation to continue serving the nation with diligence and impartiality.

Kenani, a Malawian based in Switzerland, annually recognises distinguished men and women who demonstrate exceptional performance and commitment in various areas of governance and public service. Writing on his official Facebook page, Kenani said Justice Mtalimanja stood out for upholding high ethical standards and professionalism during the highly scrutinised electoral process.

According to Kenani, the successful conduct of the elections — which resulted in President Arthur Peter Mutharika emerging as the winner — was a testament to Mtalimanja’s firm leadership and the Commission’s adherence to constitutional and legal principles.

“Justice Mtalimanja demonstrated a high sense of integrity, independence and professionalism at a critical time for Malawi’s democracy,” wrote Kenani. “Her leadership helped strengthen public confidence in the electoral process.”

Justice Mtalimanja was appointed MEC Chairperson by former President Dr Lazarus Chakwera, taking over from Justice Chifundo Kachale. Kenani also praised Justice Kachale for laying a strong foundation during his tenure, noting that the transition in leadership maintained continuity and credibility at the Commission.

Observers and governance commentators have described the award as a significant endorsement of Justice Mtalimanja’s stewardship of the electoral body, particularly amid heightened political tensions and public expectations surrounding the polls.

The recognition places Justice Mtalimanja among a growing list of Malawian leaders whose commitment to democratic governance continues to earn both local and international acclaim.
