The presence of members of the late Hastings Kamuzu Banda family, senior Malawi Congress Party (MCP) officials, Members of Parliament, and loyalists at the Kamuzu Memorial function has sparked fresh debate over why some within MCP continue expressing concern over invitations and participation in separate commemorative events.

The memorial gathering held on May 14 attracted key political and family figures connected to Kamuzu Banda’s legacy. Among those present were relatives of the late founding president, MCP supporters, parliamentarians, and the Leader of Opposition, a senior MCP figure, highlighting the party’s visible representation at the event.

Critics are now questioning why certain MCP voices appear dissatisfied or politically aggrieved when the party itself was strongly represented at the function through its senior leadership, legislators, and supporters.
The debate intensified after some political commentators argued that demands for President Lazarus Chakwera to attend or be invited to other commemorative activities lacked consistency, especially considering that the mausoleum event itself reportedly did not include the sitting president or former heads of state.

Observers note that the full participation of Kamuzu Banda’s relatives gave the gathering legitimacy and symbolic national significance, with many arguing that the presence of the family should have been enough to unify attendees beyond partisan political interests.
Political analysts say the controversy reflects broader tensions over who carries the political and historical ownership of Kamuzu Banda’s legacy. While MCP historically remains closely associated with Malawi’s founding president, many citizens believe his contribution transcends party politics and belongs to the entire nation.

Others argue that the continued politicization of Kamuzu commemorations risks undermining the dignity of national remembrance events intended to honor Malawi’s history and unity.
The attendance of opposition leadership, MCP parliamentarians, and party loyalists has therefore become central to public discussion, with critics insisting that the event already demonstrated substantial MCP participation and recognition.

As reactions continue across political circles and social media platforms, calls are growing for national memorial functions to focus on unity, historical reflection, and respect for the country’s founding leaders rather than political confrontation and competing narratives.
