Some civil society leaders operating under the banner of the Concerned Citizens of Malawi–People Power Movement have strongly condemned the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and its leadership for holding what they described as a “parallel and politically charged” Kamuzu Day commemoration event.

Speaking during a press briefing held in Blantyre on Friday morning, one of the movement’s leaders, Edward Kambanje, criticized the opposition party for organizing a separate procession and gathering during the national Kamuzu Day commemorations.

Kambanje also condemned the march by MCP supporters which was later disrupted by police in Lilongwe, saying the conduct demonstrated disrespect toward public order and state procedures governing national events.

According to Kambanje, the former ruling party must come to terms with the reality that it is no longer in government and should stop engaging in actions capable of creating political tension and disorder in the country.

“We expect responsible conduct from political leaders and their followers. Malawi needs peace, unity and respect for public institutions,” said Kambanje.

The civil society grouping further accused MCP leadership of allegedly attempting to politicize a national event meant to honor Malawi’s founding president, Hastings Kamuzu Banda.

Kambanje argued that Kamuzu Day is a state occasion that should unite Malawians regardless of political affiliation, warning that parallel political activities risk undermining the dignity of the commemoration.

The remarks come amid heightened political tensions following Thursday’s incidents in Lilongwe where police fired tear gas to disperse some MCP supporters attempting to proceed with their planned activities near the Kamuzu Mausoleum.

Authorities have maintained that all public gatherings and processions must follow proper clearance procedures involving law enforcement and city authorities to ensure public safety and order.

Meanwhile, the developments continue to spark debate across the country over political freedoms, management of public assemblies, and the growing rivalry between the current administration and the MCP opposition.
