The opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) says it has completed an assessment aimed at understanding the factors that led to its removal from government by Malawian voters.

MCP spokesperson, Jessie Kabwila, said the party will soon begin reviewing the findings of the assessment, which she believes will provide valuable lessons and help the party reposition itself for a return to power in 2030.

Kabwila said preliminary feedback gathered during the exercise suggests that many Malawians would like to see the MCP return to government.MCP, Chakwera files lawsuit against DPP, Mutharika

According to Kabwila, the assessment was conducted as part of the party’s efforts to reflect on its time in office, identify areas where it fell short, and develop strategies for rebuilding public confidence.

She acknowledged that some citizens were dissatisfied with certain developments during the party’s administration. However, she emphasized that the MCP also made notable efforts to improve the lives of Malawians through various development initiatives.

“The assessment has helped us understand what people appreciated and where they felt improvements were needed. This process is important as we prepare for the future,” she said.

Political analysts say self-assessments are a common strategy among political parties seeking to reconnect with voters after electoral defeats. The MCP’s findings are expected to shape the party’s roadmap as it prepares for future political contests, including the 2030 general elections.

As Malawi’s political landscape continues to evolve, the party’s ability to address concerns raised by citizens and present a compelling vision for the future may determine whether it can regain the trust of voters and mount a successful return to government.
