Court Adjourns Leader Of Opposition Case

The High Court in Lilongwe has adjourned to 18 July, an inter-parties hearing of a case where some members of the Democratic Progressive Party are challenging the appointment of George Chaponda as Leader of Opposition in Parliament.

Judge Kenyatta Nyirenda was supposed to start hearing the case on Thursday but both parties sought an adjournment to work on documents saying some issues have emerged around the case.

Wapona Kita, a lawyer representing the MPs, said some of the issues are the coming in of Kondwani Nankhumwa who has just joined the case.

Speaking to MBC, Cassius Chidothe, lawyer representing Nankhumwa, said his client had a similar case before High Court in Blantyre and the Court has since consolidated the two cases.

He added that his client and others are challenging the appointment of Chaponda which they say took place in their absence.
