Government Explains Why Chakwera Is Not Delegating

Authorities have justified why President Lazarus Chakwera should represent Malawi himself during the Second US-Africa Leaders’ Summit Meeting, from 13th to 15th December, in Washington DC; saying they are looking at the economic and trade opportunities the forum brings.

“Members of the public may wish to know that with the coming into effect of the African Continental Free Trade Area, business persons around the globe, particularly those in the US are keen to engage Africa as a partner in pursuing economic opportunities,” reads a statement from the Foreign Affairs Ministry.

It adds Chakwera will speak alongside other 48 African leaders on how US trade and investment inflows in Africa and, Malawi in particular should be facilitated going forward.

Meanwhile, President Chakwera and First Lady Monica Chakwera leave the country tommorow and return on 19th December 2022.

However, authorities have not indicated the number of delegates accompanying him to the Summit.

US President, Joe Biden is hosting the Summit that seeks to boost trade and investment linkages between the USA and African countries.
