Government has hiked the upkeep allowance with 75 percent

After at least three months Malawi Public Universities Student Union (MAPUSU) met officials from government on loan upkeep increment, government has partly granted the wishes of the students.

Government has hiked the upkeep allowance with 75 percent, at least 30 percent down from what the students wanted.

In an interview with Poly Observer, MAPUSU president, Lloyd Thalavuh has given thumbsup on the development saying it will mitigate the financial hiccups that students face.

“We are glad that negotiations we had have started paying off as we have started seeing the fruits. Ofcourse, the amount is not what we demanded but it is better than none. A hike from K200, 000 to K350, 000 is not a joke”, Thalavuh said.

However, Thalavuh disclosed that his office is yet to be served with official communication from government on the development.

“We need an official statement from the board on the increment and we urge them to be clear on when the change will be effective”, Added Thalavu.

Government through Loans Board this afternoon announced an upward adjust of loan upkeep from K200,000 to K350,000 per academic year.

According to the announcement, it shows that beneficiaries for 2021/2022 academic cycle will receive their arrears to cover the shortfall.

The increment has been made due to the rising cost of living in the country.
