The M1 Lot 3 road project between Jenda and the Mzimba Turnoff has reached significant progress, with key construction activities now exceeding 86 percent completion as of the end of August 2026.
According to the latest project update, 43 kilometres out of the planned 47 kilometres have been surfaced, marking major progress toward completion of the road.
The project has also advanced in the construction of major and minor drainage structures, slope protection works and other critical infrastructure designed to improve the durability and safety of the road.
A key feature of the project is the construction of climbing lanes, which are expected to improve traffic flow and road safety, particularly for heavy trucks travelling along steep sections.
Once completed, the upgraded M1 section is expected to improve connectivity, reduce travel difficulties and support the movement of people and goods along the important northern transport corridor.
The progress comes as road infrastructure remains a major priority for improving connectivity and supporting economic activity in Malawi.
