Organisation Pumps K1 Billion into Ramadan Food Aid Programme

An organisation has injected nearly K1 billion into a nationwide Ramadan food assistance programme that has so far benefited about 26,000 households across Malawi.

The food packages, distributed by the Faizan Global Relief Foundation (FGRF), are aimed at supporting vulnerable Muslim families during the holy month of Ramadan when believers fast from dawn to sunset.

Speaking on Sunday during the distribution of 2,000 food packages in Mulanje West Constituency, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Member of Parliament for the area, George Chaponda, said the support reflects God’s compassion and care for His people during the sacred period.

Chaponda said the assistance had come at a crucial time as many households struggle to afford basic food items needed to break the fast.

“It is good to receive this food aid. It shows that as people seek God through fasting, He remains close to them and continues to provide for them,” he said.

He added that the support would help Muslim families maintain their strength throughout the fasting period and encouraged beneficiaries to pray for the country’s economic stability and wellbeing.

“This support will help Muslim families nourish their bodies and have the strength to continue fasting the following day. We ask you to pray for the country’s economy and wellbeing,” said Chaponda.

One of the beneficiaries, Doreen Thumbuliwa from Kambala Village under Traditional Authority Nthilamanja, said the donation would ease the burden many families face in accessing basic food supplies.

“Nowadays it is difficult for one to afford maize flour, sugar and cooking oil at the same time. This assistance will help us greatly and reduce the financial pressure we face in feeding our households. We thank the organisation for blessing us,” she said.

FGRF Director of Public Relations and Projects Ibrahim Omar Mataya said the programme started in February in honour of the holy month of Ramadan, which ends later this week.

“Almost K1 billion has been pumped into this programme. So far we have reached about 26,000 households and we expect to assist up to 30,000 households by the end of Ramadan,” said Mataya.

He added that the initiative is rooted in Islamic teachings that encourage helping the needy and sharing with others during the holy month.

“In our Islamic faith, we believe in sharing. It is our duty to look out for our neighbours, which is why we are distributing these food packages,” he said.

The organisation has so far distributed the Ramadan food packages in districts including Mangochi, Nsanje, Thyolo, Salima, Blantyre, Chiradzulo, Mulanje and Zomba.

Each package contains 10 kilograms of maize flour, soya pieces, sugar, cooking oil and salt to help families prepare meals when breaking their daily fast.
