The former Mzuzu City Mayor, Brían Kondwani Nyasulu has described a group of demonstrators demanding his resignation from office as hired crowd used by Malawi Congress Party (MCP) operatives.
A group of individuals calling themselves concerned citizens took to the street on Tuesday demanding Nyasulu’s resignation for absenting himself from work since losing the mayoral elections last year.
In an interview at his house near the Mzuzu State House, Nyasulu described the demonstration as an MCP event only orchestrated for the regional leadership to be seen working.
“People from Msongwe Ward cannot do what you have seen championed by the northern region MCP leadership which is desperately doing every effort to weaken United Transformation Movement (UTM) at council meetings.
“The cracks are getting wider now, there is too much politicking which is an adversary for national development. We need to pull in one direction unlike this mercenary activism,” Nyasulu said.
He however put the record straight that the only time he can leave office is when his name will not be mentioned to appear on ballot papers in 2025 general election.
According to the organiser of the demonstrations, Francis CHIRAMBO the residents opted to petition Mzuzu City Council and Malawi Electrol Commission because Nyasulu has been missing council meetings since he lost mayorship in 2021.
Efforts to seek views of the MCP leadership in the northern region proved futile as they continued referring this publication from one office to the other while claiming to be attending the funeral of a ward councillor in Chitipa, Piason Kapira who has died in a road accident.
