Association of Persons With Albinism (APAM) says construction of houses for persons with albinism is based on areas which have experienced more attacks and not on regional basis.
APAM President, Young Muhamba made the remarks following a concern raised by the association’s chairperson for Mzuzu and Mzimba North Chapter, Takondwa Nungu, over poor conditions of houses of persons with albinism in Mzuzu City.
“We prioritise districts that have had more attacks on persons with albinism which include Mangochi and Machinga. Mzuzu City is also in our plan and, currently, it is a beneficiary of skin cancer prevention program,” said Muhamba.
He said the original plan was that government should construct 28 houses in the first phase but was hampered with financial constraints.
“Resources are provided in installments, as such we only managed to complete 20 houses in the first phase. We cannot manage to carter for all the districts at once,” he said.
Government plans to build 600 houses for persons with albinism in a span of five years starting from 2019.
There are 146 persons with albinism in Mzuzu and Mzimba North.
