Right Honourable Dr. Kondwani Nankhumwa, MP, Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, has encouraged women in the country to support one another and avoid petty jealousies and backbiting because they lead to enmity and hostilities.
He made the call on the night of Boxing Day at Chancellor College’s Great Hall in Zomba where Zomba Diocese Catholic Women’s Organisation held a fundraising gala night.
The Right Honourable Dr. Nankhumwa was the Guest of Honour. The opposition leader was accompanied by Chairperson for Parliament Women Caucus and Member of Parliament (MP) for Zomba Thondwe, Roseby Gadama, MP for Mwanza Central, Nicholas Dausi, Parliamentarian for Zomba Chisi, Mark Botoman, and Zomba Malosa Legislator, Grace Kwelepeta, among others.
The Vicar General for Zomba Diocese, monsignor Vincent Chilolo, High Court Judge Zione Ntaba, Senior Chief Mlumbe of Zomba and former Commissioner General for the Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) Ralph Kamoto were also other notable faces at the colourful event, which was spiced up by a live music performance by the famous Skeffa Chimoto.
Right Honourable Nankhumwa said in his speech that it is unfortunate that in most instances, it is women pulling fellow women down.
“I wish to encourage you (members of the Catholic Women’s Organisation) to foster love and unity of purpose amongst yourselves. It is only through love and unity that you can successfully achieve the organisation’s objectives as well as promote spirituality,” said Right Honourable Dr. Nankhumwa, who also serves as Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Vice President for the Southern Region.
The youthful politician acknowledged the valuable contribution that the Catholic Women’s Organisation makes towards assisting the less fortunate in society, including the sick, disabled and the elderly. He also hailed the Catholic Church in Malawi for its massive investment in the education and health sectors. Catholic schools and hospitals have contributed immensely to improving people’s lives, he noted.
The Right Honourable Dr. Nankhumwa donated K2 million to the Catholic Women’s Organisation, which seeks to complete the setting up of a maize mill, which shall be one of its main sources of income.
