The Minister of Transport and Public Works Jacob Hara says his ministry will investigate the real cause of an accident involving a bus carrying Mary Mount students in Mzimba.
Hara made the remarks at Madisi in Dowa where Ruth Tembo, a Mary Mount student who died during the accident was laid to rest.
Hara said his ministry is concerned with persisting accidents on the roads most especially because of reckless driving, and disregarding road rules and regulations.
The minister indicated that every road accident death affects the county’s GDP as every citizen is regarded as productive in their own right.
“The ministry is doing everything possible to enforce rules and regulations but there are a few misguided people who still disregard road signs and this is accelerating accidents and must stop forthwith,” said Hara.
Mary Mount Secondary School bus was carrying students from Lilongwe to Mzuzu and was involved in an accident on 2 January 2023 where Tembo died on the spot and more than 20 others got injured.
On the morning of 4 January, another student died at Kamuzu Central Hospital due to head injuries sustained during the accident.
