President Lazarus Chakwera and his Zimbabwean counterpart President Emmerson Mnangagwa have agreed to strengthen bilateral relations between Malawi and Zimbabwe for the betterment of both countries as per a joint communique signed by Malawi’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Namcy Tembo and Zimbabwe’s acting Minister of Foreign Affairs Joram Gumbo.
The communique, which Tembo read on the sidelines of a media briefing at Sanjika Palace in Blantyre, indicates that the two leaders have also agreed to preserve diplomatic and political consultations for the joint exploration of solutions on matters of mutual interest between the two countries.
“The two Heads of State have agreed to improve trade between the two countries to previous trade volumes by, among other things, removing trade and non-trade barriers that are impeding trade between them.” reads the communique in part.
Furthermore, Chakwera and Mnangagwa have agreed to work together in ensuring that there is household food security in both Malawi and Zimbabwe.
The media briefing was held at the end of a State visit by Mnangagwa.
Prior to the briefing today, Chakwera and Mnangagwa visited Kapeni View where they cheered Cyclone Freddy victims and later went to Conforzi Plantations in Thyolo District.
