Minister Richard Chimwendo Banda Highlights Role of Local Authorities in Achieving Malawi 2063 Agenda

By Burnett Munthali

During the third annual awards and gala dinner organized by the Malawi Local Government Association (MALGA) in Salima, Minister of Local Government, Unity, and Culture Richard Chimwendo Banda emphasized the critical role that local authorities play in fulfilling the Malawi 2063 agenda. His remarks underscored the government’s reliance on councils to drive development initiatives that align with the national vision for sustainable growth and development.

Banda urged councils to consistently innovate and implement creative solutions that support the goals outlined in the Malawi 2063 agenda. He commended the exemplary work of Chitipa District, which was recognized as the most innovative council of the year, and Nkhotakota District, honored for its commitment to the MW2063 agenda. These accolades reflect the effectiveness of local governance in responding to the needs of communities and advancing the national development framework.

The Minister’s address highlighted the importance of collaboration between local authorities and the central government to foster an environment conducive to growth and progress. By encouraging councils to develop innovative strategies, the government aims to harness local potential and drive the transformation needed to realize the aspirations of the Malawi 2063 agenda.

In a related statement, MALGA Executive Director Hadrod Mkandawire noted the positive impact of reduced political interference in various developmental programs, which has led to improved performance among local councils. This reduction in interference has allowed councils to focus on delivering services and implementing projects that directly benefit their communities.

Awards were presented to various councils for their outstanding achievements in local governance. The Lilongwe City Council was recognized for the best financial performance of the year, while Blantyre, Dowa, and Lilongwe Districts received accolades as the best local revenue-generating councils of the year. These awards not only celebrate the achievements of local authorities but also serve as motivation for all councils to strive for excellence in service delivery and community development.

The gala dinner served as an important platform for local government stakeholders to share experiences, celebrate successes, and discuss strategies for overcoming challenges. As local authorities continue to play a pivotal role in the country’s development, the Minister’s call for innovation and collaboration remains crucial in advancing the Malawi 2063 agenda.
