Political Parties Calls The Resignation Of MEC Chair Is Baseless–Chaima

Governance Expert, George Chaima, says that calls for the resignation of Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Chairperson Justice Annabel Mtalimanja by opposition political parties and certain civil society organizations lack merit.

The opposition parties—namely, the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), UTM, Alliance for Democracy (AFORD), and United Democratic Front (UDF)—wrote to Justice Mtalimanja, demanding her resignation, claiming her leadership is compromised.

However, speaking to Timveni, Chaima says Mtalimanja was duly appointed, and the current calls for her to resign raise eyebrows.

According to Chaima, Mtalimanja is a qualified Malawian and meets the requirements for the position.

The Public Affairs Committee (PAC) on Thursday emphasised the need for dialogue between political parties and MEC.
