The Chikwawa First Grade Magistrate’s Court has sentenced 25-year-old John Justin to four years imprisonment for stealing cattle valued at K1.1 million.
District Police Spokesperson Dickson Matemba said the court heard that Justin stole the livestock from a farmer in Padzuwa Village, Traditional Authority Kasisi, on August 14, 2024.
“Appearing in court, the convict pleaded not guilty,” Matemba explained.
This prompted State Prosecutor Yamikani Sindeya to parade four witnesses whose testimonies led to Justin’s conviction. In his submission, Sindeya pointed out that cattle theft is on the rise in Chikwawa, calling for a stern punishment to deter would-be offenders.
First Grade Magistrate Joram Zebron agreed with the prosecutor and sentenced Justin to four years behind bars.
Meanwhile, law enforcers in Chikwawa have apprehended a 29-year-old man, Samu James, for allegedly stealing nine head of cattle valued at K7 million. Investigations are ongoing as authorities seek to curb the increasing prevalence of livestock theft in the district.
The conviction and sentencing of Justin, coupled with the swift action against James, underscore law enforcement’s commitment to protecting farmers and their livelihoods in Chikwawa. Magistrate Zebron emphasized that severe penalties are necessary to send a strong message to potential offenders.
Cattle theft remains a significant challenge for communities in Malawi, where livestock is a critical source of income and sustenance.
