As the political landscape of Malawi shifts toward the upcoming 2025 elections, it’s becoming clearer that the current commission of inquiry, particularly surrounding sensitive issues like the Chikangawa plane crash, is nothing more than a smokescreen designed to distract and delay the inevitable truths. The government under the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has, to many, become synonymous with political maneuvering that seeks to preserve the status quo, regardless of the truth or the cost to public trust.
The ongoing inquiry into the plane crash is a classic example of the MCP’s attempt to maintain control by offering empty promises of transparency and justice. Despite public outcry and suspicions about the crash, the inquiry has produced little to no concrete results. It’s a commission that, at best, serves as a temporary diversion, giving the illusion of accountability while ultimately wasting time and resources that could have been better spent on investigating the deeper, unresolved issues at hand.
However, history has a way of exposing the truth, no matter how hard those in power try to suppress it. The real commission of inquiry will not come under the current MCP government. It will come when a new government takes power after the 2025 elections. When the MCP inevitably loses power, we will see the emergence of a truly independent investigation that will uncover the details of the Chikangawa plane crash and other crucial events that have remained shrouded in secrecy.
The truth of what truly happened during that tragic crash will come to light in due time, but not now. It’s clear that the current commission, backed by the MCP, is not the vehicle for justice. Instead, it is an example of how political interests can manipulate the narrative to maintain power and avoid accountability. The real answers will come, and they will not be able to be concealed forever. When the time comes, the public will finally know what really transpired, and those responsible for withholding the truth will have nowhere to hide. Until then, we must remain patient but vigilant, knowing that the real commission of inquiry will only happen once the MCP government has been voted out of office in September 2025.
