Malawi’s Electoral Commission (MEC) is entrusted with a sacred duty: to uphold the will of the people through free, fair, and transparent elections.
It exists to serve Malawians with honor, dignity, and impartiality. However, when the institution begins to betray this trust by engaging in practices that undermine democracy, it becomes imperative for patriotic citizens to demand accountability and change.
If the Watchdog Fails, Who Will Protect the Sheep?
“A guard that opens the gates to thieves is no better than the thief himself.”
The leadership of MEC, led by Justice Anabel Ntalimanja, should stand accused of rigging elections this a betrayal of democracy is so grave it needs immediate intervention.
Reports of suspicious voter registration activities in the Central Region, particularly involving teenagers, coupled with the contentious insistence on using Smartmatic machines despite public opposition, suggest malpractice and impartial.
Why Should We Keep a Broken Compass?
MEC is supposed to guide Malawi through the electoral process, just as a compass guides a traveler.
But what good is a compass that knowingly points south when we aim for the north?
Allowing the current mec leadership to preside over the 2025 general elections is akin to sealing our democratic fate before the first vote is cast.
As it stands, the irregularities and dubious practices already hint at a compromised process.
A Democracy for the People, By the People
Our African proverb says it so beautifully A house that stands silent as termites eat its pillars will surely collapse.”
All Malawians who cherish democracy—citizens, NGOs, freedom fighters, All activists religious leaders, and those MPs who sides with democracy—must speak up now. Silence only enables the erosion of our democratic values that is before it is too late.
If MEC leadership cannot conduct itself with integrity, transparency, and accountability, then it has no moral authority to oversee any electoral process.
Anabel Ntalimanja’s refusal to resign in the face of public outcry is a blatant dismissal of the will of the people and this should the wrath of the people for Such defiance cannot be tolerated in a democracy.
The integrity of the 2025 elections is already under threat.
The numbers being registered in certain regions are suspicious, public confidence in electronic voting systems has eroded, and MEC’s unwillingness to address these issues transparently only deepens the crisis.
This is not just about political parties or individuals; it is about protecting Malawi’s democratic soul.
To save our democracy:
- Demand Legal Interpretation: Citizens, lawyers, and civil society must seek legal intervention to dissolve the current MEC leadership immediately.
- Mobilize Nationwide Support: NGOs, human rights organizations, and religious groups should rally together to demand justice and electoral integrity.
- Document the Truth: Keep a record of these irregularities in confidential diaries or public platforms as evidence of a rigged system.
Malawi belongs to all its citizens, not to a select few who manipulate the electoral system for their gain.
To protect the sanctity of our democracy, we must act decisively and demand the immediate dissolution of the MEC leadership.
“If the pot leaks, you don’t wait for the stew to spill—you fix it now.” Let us fix this broken system before it’s too late.
My pen is mightier than a Sword.
