Former President of Malawi and leader of the opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), Arthur Peter Mutharika, has extended his congratulations to Ghana’s former president, John Dramani Mahama, following his victory in the presidential election held on November 7, 2024.
In a statement released by Mutharika, he acknowledged the trust the people of Ghana have placed once again in Mahama to restore progress and address the challenges facing the nation.
Mahama, representing the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), defeated Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, the candidate for the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), in what observers have described as a highly contested election.
In his congratulatory message, Mutharika praised Mahama’s resilience and commitment to his nation. “The people of Ghana have spoken, entrusting you once again with the responsibility to lead and rebuild. Your victory is a testament to their confidence in your leadership and vision,” he wrote.
As Malawi prepares for its own presidential elections next year, Mutharika, who previously served as the country’s president, is set to contest. His candidacy will see him vying for the top office once again, amid hopes of reclaiming leadership.
The political developments in Ghana serve as an inspiration to many opposition leaders in Africa, showcasing the possibility of a return to power through democratic means.
