Karonga farmers advised to plant early maturing crops to mitigate delayed rains

By Burnett Munthali

Karonga District Agriculture Development Officer (DADO), Yaz Nyirenda, has urged farmers in the district to prioritize planting early maturing crops as a strategy to reduce potential losses caused by the delayed onset of rains.

In an interview, Nyirenda expressed concern over how the late arrival of rains has disrupted the planting calendar, emphasizing the need for proactive measures to secure a successful harvest.

“Farmers should plant early maturing crops as rains have come late, and those planting maize should apply basal dressing and top dressing fertilizers within 28 days of planting to reduce the impact that such rains might come with,” he advised.

Nyirenda’s advice aligns with the predictions of the Department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services, which has forecasted a wetter-than-usual 2024/2025 rainfall season. The district is expected to receive normal to above-normal rainfall, presenting opportunities for farmers who adopt timely and appropriate agronomic practices.

The use of early maturing crop varieties can help farmers maximize yields within a shorter growing season, safeguarding them against potential challenges such as unexpected dry spells or excessive rainfall toward the end of the season.

To complement this advice, the DADO also encouraged farmers to follow recommended fertilizer application practices and monitor their crops closely throughout the growing period.

The Department of Agriculture continues to work closely with local farmers, providing guidance and resources to enhance agricultural resilience in the face of climate variability. With such interventions, Karonga’s farming community is hopeful for a productive season despite the challenges posed by delayed rains.

For further information, farmers are encouraged to consult their local agricultural extension officers and attend district-level agricultural workshops.
