To ensure that Malawi has no seasonal shortage of beef, the Small Producers Development and Transporters Association (SPRODETA) has embarked on an awareness campaign aimed at enhancing the quality of beef production and maximizing profits for farmers.
This initiative is part of the broader “Beef Value Chain” Project, conducted in collaboration with the Transforming Agriculture through Diversification and Entrepreneurship (TRADE).
Jacqueline Khumalo, SPRODETA’s Monitoring and Evaluation Officer says the campaign, which spanned two days across four Extension Planning Areas (EPAs) in Karonga district, focused on educating farmers on best practices in livestock management.
Khumalo underscored the importance of this education in boosting cattle production and promoting commercial beef farming among local farmers.

“The campaign is expected to strengthen the beef industry in the district by equipping farmers with the necessary skills to compete effectively in the market,” said Khumalo.
Karonga District Veterinary Officer, Michael Mapundi, commended the initiative, highlighting the valuable knowledge farmers gained on disease management.
“It is imperative for the farmers to acquire the valuable knowledge on disease management and maximise profits in animal husbandry,” stressed Kampaundi.
Harry Mhango, a farmer from Village Head Muyeleka, welcomed the project, citing its potential to improve beef quality and increase profits.
By promoting good livestock-keeping practices and disease management, SPRODETA aims to enhance the overall quality of beef production in Karonga District.
