WOLREC and WUSC Launch Three-Year Initiative to Empower Women and Improve Early Childhood Education

The Women’s Legal Resources Centre (WOLREC), in partnership with the World University Service of Canada (WUSC), has launched a new initiative aimed at economically empowering women and improving childcare and early childhood education in Mkombaphala zones.

The project is designed to strengthen both the quality of care and the education of young children by providing incentives to caregivers through financial support.

According to WOLREC Executive Director Maggie Kathewera Banda, childcare for children from infancy to three years old has long been undervalued in Malawi.

She noted that this neglect has had negative consequences on both child development and early education.

Kathewera Banda emphasized that the initiative seeks to change this narrative by recognizing the importance of proper early childhood care and supporting those who provide it.

The launch event was graced by the Deputy Minister of Gender, Community Development and Social Welfare, Halima Daudi, who served as the guest of honour.

She commended the initiative and highlighted the critical role women play in national development, especially when supported with resources and opportunities.

The three-year project is being implemented with funding from Global Affairs Canada.

It is expected to make a significant impact in promoting gender equality, boosting economic opportunities for women, and ensuring children have a strong start through quality early education and care.

Stakeholders at the launch expressed optimism that the program will address long-standing gaps in child welfare and create a more inclusive and supportive environment for women and children alike.

Through this initiative, WOLREC and WUSC aim to lay a foundation for sustainable development by investing in the potential of both women and the next generation.
