President Chakwera appeals for peace and tolerance by political leaders

President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has urged fellow political leaders in the country to foster peace and tolerance, stressing that such values are essential for advancing democracy and development.

Speaking to thousands of cheerful people who welcomed him upon arrival in Mangochi on Monday, the President said that as Malawians, are going for the general elections in September this year, peaceful coexistence and respectful dialogue can help to create an environment that encourages national unity and progress.

He appealed to all political leaders in the country to put the needs of the nation above partisan interests, by refraining from political violence.

‘‘Peaceful coexistence and tolerance are important values in a society, and as we are moving closer to the general elections in September this year, I am urging my fellow political leaders to advance the needs of the nation above our political interests, by refraining from violence.’’

‘‘I was concerned by what happened in Machinga recently where some people attacked our supporters. Such attitude cannot take us anywhere, and as leaders we must not tolerate it,’’ said Chakwera.

He therefore asked communities in Mangochi to continue supporting his leadership, for sustained development.

In his remarks, Secretary General for the ruling Malawi Congress Party (MCP), Richard Chimwendo Banda commended President Chakwera for his leadership in ensuring that all regions across the country are developing equally.

Among others, Chimwendo Banda outlined developments such as the construction of the Mangochi-Cape Maclear road, Mangochi District Council Upstairs office, Nkhudzi-Bay water supply system, as well as upgrading of Makanjira Health Centre to a Rural Hospital.

Added Chimwendo Banda ‘‘Many governments in the past have failed to outsource resources for the construction of Mangochi-Makanjira road, but your excellency, you have proven them wrong, whereby as of now we have secured funds, and construction works will start very soon. All this is because of your dynamic leadership.’’

Speaking earlier, Traditional Authority (T/A) Mapira commended the President for promoting workers in government, including teachers, as well as traditional leaders.
