The Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and Malawi Electoral Commission (Mec) stands to brace themselves for more demonstrations on the basis that Malawi citizens are now enlightened people totally different from the way they were in the June, 2020 elections.
After holding peaceful which in the end turned violent demonstrations in Mzuzu calling for the resignations of Mec Chairperson Justice Annabel Mtalimanja and Chief Elections Officer Andrew Mpesi for siding with Smartmatic machines against the people’s will, Lilongwe, which is the home of armed MCP thugs, is next.
Leaders of two human rights organizations Comrades Edwards Kambanje and Bon Kalindo have filed a notice notifying Lilongwe District Commissioner Dr. Lawford Palani of their intention to hold such a big demonstration in the City that Malawians are against Mec using Smartmatic machines on the 16th September, 2025 elections.
Kambanje and Kalindo have argued that Mec is not prepared to hold free and fair elections and as such Mtalimanja and Mpesi must step down for deliberately rejecting independent ICT auditors to audit Mec system because they have a candidate to favor.
The demonstrations in Lilongwe will be held on the 5th June, 2025 and for the first time, it will be Masintha ground the starting point where it is expected that people from Chilinde, Kawale, Biwi and Mchesi townships will patronize the demonstrations to the DCs office to deliver their petition.
The two, Comrades Kambanje and Kalindo have issued a stern warning that should Mec fail to respond positively to their demands, street protests will escalate to many districts claiming that it is only Mec and MCP behind the use of Smartmatic machines.
In Mangochi, the Makanjira Road Concerned Citizens have filed a notice to hold peaceful demonstrations on 3rd June, 2025 for government to tell the public when they are going to begin constructing the road project.
The Makanjira Road Concerned Citizens say Minister of Transport Jacob Hara promised the citizens in the district that the road construction project will begin in 2 weeks’ time but till this day, there is nothing to show that the project would start.
“We all know that the government has reserved a total of USD 107.6 million which is enough for the 108 Kilometer road construction project,” reads the notice in part.
