Vendors in Mangochi have joined forces issuing a notice of 5 days’ demonstration to boycott government officials, Department from collecting revenue in the district due to the delay by government to start construction of Mangochi- Makanjira Road.
President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera took all the Mangochi chiefs and councilors and other prominent people to Saudi Arabia to witness the signing in of the loan agreement for the construction of Makanjira Road which to this day has not started.
With the campaign period officially launched from 14th July to 14th September, 2025, people and vendors in Mangochi feel deceived that the road construction project will just be a dream comes true hence to take drastic measures against government.
In a letter dated 14th July, 2025 the Malawi Freedom Fighters notified Mangochi District Commissioner of the impending demonstration but in its response to the organization, District Commissioner for Mangochi Davie Chigwenembe, says phase one of the Makanjira Road works have commenced with effect from 17th July, 2025.
In the letter dated 18th July, 2025 with copies to Police Officer in Charge- Mangochi and other relevant bodies, Chigwenembe says the contractor of the Makanjira Road works – Mortal Engil is on site and the Roads Authority has planned for a series of meetings with communities along the road to disseminate detailed information.
Chigwenembe says he is welcoming further engagement with Malawi Freedom Fighters to enhance their mutual understanding expressing hope that they will find this information very important as they passionately look for a better road to service Makanjira which is their concern as well.
In the advert which is circulating in various media platforms, the Malawi Freedom Fighters demonstration is advising the people of Mangochi that on the said days from 21st to 25th July, 2025 there will be no Road Blocks, and no traffic officers on the roads.
The group says from the 21st to 25th July, 2025 they will hold a vigil at the District Commissioner’s office, those of M’baluku will be at M’baluku Road block, Malindi to meet at Mgoza Roadblock, Mpiripiri to meet at T/A Makanjira’s house and those of Lulanga to meet at the house of Hon. Benedicto Chambo.
“We are thankful that other clusters from Blantyre, Zomba, Balaka, Machinga, Ntcheu, Lilongwe are supporting us to make sure that the demonstration is free from any forms of violence until all of our demands are met,” reads the advert in part.
