United Transformation Movement (UTM) presidential hopeful Dalitso Kabambe has said Malawi’s leaders must stop deceiving citizens by blaming the struggling economy on sudden disasters, pandemics, and the Russia-Ukraine war.
Speaking at a campaign event, Kabambe said Malawi’s economic woes are a result of poor leadership and policy failures, not external shocks. He emphasized that real solutions are needed to restore stability and growth.
On the issue of people living in flood-prone areas of Chikwawa and Nsanje, Kabambe opposed relocation. Instead, he promised to construct dams, create water channels, and implement proper water management systems to reduce the impact of floods.
However, United Democratic Front (UDF) leader Atupele Muluzi challenged Kabambe’s approach, saying it is impossible to fight against nature. While agreeing that government policies have failed to grow the economy, Muluzi stressed that people in high-risk flood zones need safer alternatives.
“I will work with traditional leaders and other organizations to ensure affected communities are relocated to safer grounds,” Muluzi said, insisting that long-term safety must take priority over temporary flood-control measures.
The contrasting views from Kabambe and Muluzi highlight how flood disaster management and economic recovery are becoming key issues ahead of Malawi’s 2025 elections.
