A growing wave of public sentiment across Malawi is calling for strong accountability measures against individuals allegedly linked to acts of political intimidation and violence under the banner of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP). Citizens say the era of political impunity must come to an end, insisting that anyone who breaks the law should face justice — regardless of political affiliation.

In various districts, community voices, civil society groups, and governance advocates have expressed frustration over recurring reports of violence and threats believed to be orchestrated by people acting under political protection. Many argue that Malawi’s democracy can only thrive when the rule of law is respected and applied equally to all.

“We don’t want revenge or violence. What we want is justice,” said a community representative in Lilongwe.
“No one should be above the law simply because they belong to a governing party.”

According to activists, the calls are not directed at the MCP as a political institution, but at individuals allegedly using the party’s influence to intimidate citizens, silence critics, and disrupt free expression. They stress that accountability is essential for strengthening the nation’s democratic values.

Governance analyst Maxwell Ziba noted that law enforcement agencies must demonstrate independence and courage in handling such cases.

“Political impunity weakens democracy,” he said.
“The moment people believe some groups are untouchable, public trust collapses.”

Citizens are urging institutions such as the Malawi Police Service, the Anti-Corruption Bureau, and the Directorate of Public Prosecutions to act swiftly and without political interference. Many view this as a crucial test for Malawi’s commitment to transparency and justice.

Across the country, the message remains firm and unified:

No more political intimidation.

No more shielded thuggery.

Justice must prevail — for every Malawian.

As the pressure builds, all eyes are now on state institutions to see whether they will rise to the occasion and restore confidence in the rule of law.
