Malawi’s Vice President, Dr. Jane Mayemu Ansah, has called for a comprehensive approach to advancing women’s rights across Africa, emphasizing that achieving gender equality requires more than just legal frameworks.

Represented by her daughter, Janet Ansah, at the 60th birthday anniversary of renowned human rights advocate, Joy Ezeilo, in Enugu, Ansah stressed that integrated strategies addressing social, economic, institutional, and cultural barriers are necessary to overcome persistent gender inequality.

Despite progress made through constitutional provisions and legal instruments, Ansah noted that weak enforcement, institutional gaps, and entrenched patriarchal norms continue to hinder women’s participation in economic development, particularly in rural communities.

The Vice President highlighted the importance of economic empowerment, citing limited access to land, credit, and financial systems as major obstacles. She also drew attention to emerging challenges such as digital inequality, climate change, and migration, which disproportionately affect women and girls.

Ansah emphasized that advancing women’s rights is not only a moral obligation but also a governance and development priority. Her call to action comes as Malawi continues to make strides in promoting women’s rights, with her own appointment as Vice President marking a significant milestone.

As a trailblazer in law and politics, Ansah’s leadership is seen as a beacon of hope for women’s empowerment in Malawi and beyond. Her commitment to advancing women’s rights is evident in her work, and she continues to inspire others to join the fight for gender equality.

The Vice President’s message is clear: women’s rights are not peripheral but central to sustainable democracy and development. It’s time for African nations to move beyond policy declarations and take actionable steps to ensure real protection and empowerment for women, particularly at the grassroots level.
