A prominent Islamic scholar in Malawi, Sheikh Hussein Ubin, has praised the leadership of the Muslim Association of Malawi (MAM) for their commitment to upholding the rule of law following a recent court directive regarding the organization’s elections.

In February this year, the High Court nullified MAM’s previous elections, which had been conducted under the 2018 constitution, and ordered that fresh elections be organized in accordance with the current constitutional framework. The ruling was widely seen as a critical step toward restoring procedural integrity within the organization.

In a statement, Sheikh Ubin described the leadership’s decision to comply with the court order as commendable, noting that it reflects a strong commitment to transparency, accountability, and justice. He emphasized that such actions are essential in fostering unity and trust among Muslims in Malawi.

“The willingness by MAM leaders to follow legal guidance sets a good example and reinforces the importance of fairness in institutional processes,” he said.

Sheikh Ubin further urged the leadership to execute their responsibilities with professionalism and independence, free from undue influence. He stressed that their conduct should align with the teachings and traditions of Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), particularly in matters of governance and public service.

Addressing candidates contesting in the forthcoming elections, Sheikh Ubin reminded them that leadership within the Islamic community is a sacred trust, not merely a position of power. He cautioned against adopting divisive or unethical campaign practices often associated with secular politics.

“Those contesting must demonstrate integrity, humility, and a genuine commitment to serving the community. Leadership in Islam is about responsibility, not personal gain,” he said.

He also called on candidates to respect the electoral process and have confidence in those entrusted with overseeing the elections. At the same time, he encouraged voters to exercise discernment by choosing leaders based on their character and moral standing.

“Voters must be mindful and informed. The leaders they elect will represent their values and guide the direction of the community,” he added.

Sheikh Ubin concluded by appealing to all Muslims in the country to remain calm and patient as preparations for the elections continue, underscoring the importance of unity during this period.

The anticipated elections are expected to play a pivotal role in shaping the future leadership of MAM and reinforcing governance standards within the organization.
